Free Blackberry apps that run over Wi-Fi

I have a blackberry Curve 8320. I do not have a data plan. Why you say? Well, I just don’t have the need for it. You see, I am 90 percent of the time in places where I have access to Wi-Fi. When I am on the road I have free access to AT&T hot-spots (I am an AT&T DSL subscriber), which includes McDonald’s, Barnes & Noble, Starbucks and who knows what else.

So I wanted to find free apps that would allow me to use my IM accounts, publish Twitter and Facebook updates, check weather and use my Gmail account. I also did not want to have to tweak my Blackberry in any way. I wanted apps that work out of the box!

A bumpy road

I guess I am too naive. The first thing I did was going to the Blackberry site to happily download Facebook for Blackberry, Twitter for Blackberry, MSN for Blackberry and so on. But of course, Blackberry is a business, they want you to pay for a data plan, thus most applications don’t run over Wi-Fi. I started searching on-line, some people claimed that this or that app would run over Wi-Fi by setting the Blackberry to use Wi-Fi and not the data plan. In most cases this is not true because the apps were designed to run only over the data plan.

Testing process

I installed many apps, tried them and eventually had to remove them. At that time I was not thinking on writing this blog post and unfortunately I did not keep a list of the ones that failed.

The ones that worked!

I have not tried every single app I could find, thus the list here may not have the best free apps that run on BB over Wi-Fi, they are the ones I know so far. And again, you can trust they actually work over Wi-Fi because I do not have a data plan. Here they are:

Bing for Blackberry m.bing.com/download/ You get Search, Maps, Top News, Business Directory and Get Directions. Pretty sweet. My favorite SE is Google, sadly Google Apps won’t run over Wi-Fi. I found some people were able to make Google Apps run by using a program called WiFiX. WiFiX is an app that will fool your BB into believing it is using your data plan, tunneling the connections through your Wi-Fi. I tried it and did not like it, I don’t think it is yet ready for prime time. I’ll keep an eye on it though.

Opera Mini mini.opera.com/ This is a nice and fast web browser, much faster than the default BB browser, the only limitation I found is you still need to use the BB browser to install apps, but I can live with that.

Snaptu m.snaptu.com Snaptu gives you a lot, it is like a portal with a list of apps you can use, the ones I care about are Facebook, Twitter and Weather, but you have others like movies and games. The Facebook and Twitter app are very basic, but again, they are free and work over Wi-Fi! For Twitter there are several options, but for Facebook this is the only one I have found so far, if you know of a better one, please let me know. Warning: People with data plan should now that there is a bug in this application that causes Snaptu to use the data channel. If you do not have a data plan you should be ok. Thanks to Kalt for pointing this out.

UberTwitter ubertwitter.com Thanks to Husss and Jason I tried this one, and I was blown away! This is by far the best free twitter client I have tried for BB that works over Wi-Fi. It has all the features I wanted to have. And it is fast too. If you use the free version it will display ads, but they are really not that intrusive. I recommend this app for Twitter.

TwiXtreme twixtreme.com/ This is a Twitter app, I prefer this one to the one included in Snaptu.

OpenBeak m.openbeak.com Another Twitter app, not as nice as TwiXtreme but faster, nicer than the one included in Snaptu.

Nimbuzz get.nimbuzz.com This is an IM app that work with the following networks: Windows Live Messenger, Skype Chat, Yahoo, Facebook, Google Talk, AIM, Myspace and ICQ.

LogicMail logicmail.org/ota This is a nice e-mail client that you can configure to get your email from any email account that supports POP or IMAP. I use it to read my Gmail. The details on how to configure it for Gmail are here

I am very friendly, let me know what you think about the article, what could be added to it, whether you were surprised or disappointed. Lets start the conversation!

Do you know a better app?

If you know of better apps for the categories shown above, or apps you cannot live without, please comment and let us know. I will update the post, so more people can take advantage of the Wi-Fi, even if RIM and the Carriers don’t want us to.

Note: I am not a Blackberry expert. I am a regular BB user who is publishing his findings on apps that work over Wi-Fi so others can benefit.  I cannot give expert advise on how to install them in different versions of BB OS, different devices or tweaks.

  1. This is awesome thanks so much i’ve been looking for ages for an alternative!!

  2. I only wanted nimbuzz and Logical mail….. but only nimbuzz worked…

    • LogicalMail works, but you need to configure it, is not straight forward. If you read carefully my post, there is a link to another post where you can find the instructions to configure it.

  3. hi
i am interested in getting some free apps for my girlfriends phone as she doesnt have a data plan so isnt really using any apps at all except normal sms texting and phone calls.
she would mainly want to use a facebook app where u read news feeds/status’s etc aswel as comments. is the one you posted, snapsu still the best one or have you found another yet?
also how exactly would I get the apps onto the blackberry device to be able to install them?
    regards
    lee

    • @lee, if you download the latest facebook app, i think 2.0.x, you’ll be able to use it on a WiFi connection out of the box..

i tried it on my wife’s 9810 Torch2 and it works fine. The app version 1.9.x that came with the phone doesn’t work on Wifi.

    • Snaptu is good, but HootSuite is good as well. It does not come with all the features of the regular Facebook for BB, but it is good to get you going. To download the apps, use your BB browser, go to my post and click on the names of the apps, or you can download it with the BB manager in your computer.

  4. Thx 4 sharing…..
do u know how to make the blackberry messenger work wizout a data plan??
its my first time using blackberry and i dont really know much abt it

    i got a bb torch…
    thx again

    • You can’t. BB messenger works only when you have a BB plan. There is another messenger called WhatsUpp that connects you not only to Blackberries but also to iPhones and Androids, but your friends will need to install it as well. I use it and it is really nice.

      • thx so much 4 z info…..
wat if i take the plan for only one month….and just to get the bbm working and zen i cancel z subscription….will it still work?

i know im asking stupid questions….but as i told u, i dont know much abt blackberries :P

I’d like to start by thanking you for the article. It’s very useful.
I can’t get the thing with sinaptu. I entered the site just to get redirected to the facebook page. What’s the catch? That is sinaptu? Or is it an app that runs on your phone(not on the browser).

    @farza:
You can’t.You must have a data plan while running those app.

    • I use it too and it is great, but it is only for people with smartphones, so it is not my primary messenger, I use mainly Nimbuzz which allows me to run msn messenger, yahoo’s, gtalk, aim, facebook, icq and more.

  13. Snaptu no longer works for Blackberry, but thank you for the rest of these! I went from an iPhone with unlimited data to a blackberry with only wifi so this is super helpful :)

  14. Hello! Your post is damn good! May I know where I can download Whatsapp or Facebook app that doesn’t require a data plan? Thank you soooo much!

  15. great! much thanks

  16. Omygod! This is soooo helpful! Keep it up! We need more nice guys like you! ;)

  17. I just cancelled my data today and now app world won’t connect. I downloaded nimbuzz but it won’t log in because I don’t have data, is there something wrong with the way my phone is set up?

Also..I installed logicmail and I cannot set up my gmail or hotmail for the life of me…I followed the instructions you posted, the instructions posted on logicmail, and even a separate one I googled.. i cannot understand why it’s not working now (at one point it connected but wouldnt send outgoing so I deleted it and now it won’t work again). Please help!

    • Are you sure your BB has wi-fi? Not all models do.

      • Mine does, Torch 9800…it’s really odd I find that when I leave wifi zone for a long period of time (ie go out for an hour or so and then come back within wifi zone) my wifi stops working until I do a full restart my phone (which takes about 5 minutes…each time) then wifi will work until I leave wifi zone again…

Is there a way to prevent that?

  18. Hi there! I feel awkward when I found out that I need data plan just to chat or get IM. I downloaded fb messenger and working fine the facebook apps. I’m done DL the Nimbuzz for free IM client and got the BB 9300 and I can’t sign and it says”The sign in has failed. Please check the device network settings and the network connection and try again. ” I tried to set-up the APN settings of our ISP. but I can’t figure it out. Need help.

  19. Jriano,

I currently have an olllllllllllld Motorola Razr and am looking to upgrade possibly to a Blackberry. Sooooo, let me get this straight….. I am on ATT with NO data plan and no text msging.
I plan on activating unlimited texting soon.
    1. Are you saying I can buy a Blackberry Curve and merely put my Razr SIM card in it?
    2. AT&T won’t require me to buy one of their data plans?
    3. I can be connected to WIFI anywhere there is a HotSpot?
    4. There are actually WIFI apps that don’t require a data plan?
WOW!!! If this is all true, I’ll bet AT&T doesn’t want anyone to know about it!
Thanks, You are a true patriotic American.

    • Yes to all… but make sure you buy a BB that has wi-fi, not all of them do. On a side note, since I wrote this article, I switched to Android, and it is much better than BB, if you are buying, consider Android instead.

  20. Kik messenger works really well over wifi. Its similar to BB messenger.

  21. Hi
Thanks very much,I found out the same way you did about apps not working without a data plan.
    This has been very helpful.
    Cheers
    Cliff

  22. Hello. Your posts were really helpful. Thank-you. Is there a way to download games by bypassing BB data plan as well.

  23. Thanks dear, it was realy good list

  24. Hi, PTNews also works over Wi-Fi.
However it is not “free”, although the price is very low. It is particularly suitable for Portuguese people

  25. Your so nice men!!…keep it up..thanks to your post…

  26. HELLO Juan, Let me first congratulate you on a brilliant an informative web site. Thank you very much for creating this page to help uninformed users….I was also hoping you would clear up a few inquiries i had as well. First of all i am from the Caribbean, and every month our net work provider gives us the option to renew our data plan…This month however i have decided to solely rely on my blackberry’s ability to transfer data using wifi. So these are the things i can do:
    - Receive an send text messages/calls…
    - Access facebook and other apps that use wifi like whatsapp etc.

Things i cannot do however are:
    - Access my instant messengers such as google chat, msn messenger, aol, blackberry messenger an yahoo…..

According to the information provided above: There is no way i can access these apps without a data plan. I am however curious about the “Nimbuzz” app…….if u could possible give me more information on it an how it is used. Because i have tried to install it on my mobile an it doesnt seem to be working as i thought it would…….Anyways i am helpless without my messengers. Can u offer a solution to my woes?

    • Guys, sorry but I just don’t have time to help you troubleshoot. I have three jobs, go to school and have wife and kids.

  27. There is also implus for msn, facebook, skype, and others.

  28. Thanks for the well written and useful post! I have used Opera for a good while but had no idea about great apps like Logicmail!
    Thanks for sharing :)

  29. I think that Logicmail sucks. It keeps disconnecting and never gives me a desktop notification for my Gmail.

Is there any way to get the GMail App to work without a data plan and over a wifi. I have managed to download and install it but when I try to run it so that I can input my login details, I get a message that says ‘APN not specified’. I’ve read numerous posts where people have said the putting the APN details should do the trick.

However, if I put in the APN details how will that affect my WiFi? I have a prepaid sim card and add credit as and when I need it. Will adding the APN settings affect the balance on my SIM or my home WiFi.

ALso, I managed to download Twitter for Blackberrry the twitter website and that seems to run without any problems.

Please can you help me? PLEASE!?

  30. I was wondering if there are any apps that can be used for free texting over wifi?
